Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a doctor’s referral or prescription to start physical therapy?
In New York, patients can generally see a licensed physical therapist through direct access without first getting a referral. However, insurance coverage rules can vary by plan, so patients should verify benefits with both the office and their insurer.
Do you accept my insurance, and what will my out-of-pocket cost be?
Yes, we accept major insurance, workers’ compensation, and private pay. We accept the following:Medicare
Independent Health
Your Care
Blue Cross/Blue Shield
Workers Compensation
No Fault
Molina
Aetna
Nova
Humana
United Healthcare
Cigna
If you have any questions about insurance, co-pays, or more, please contact our office.
What should I bring to my first physical therapy appointment?
Patients should bring a photo ID, insurance card, referral or prescription if applicable, relevant imaging or medical records, a medication list, and any required intake forms. Comfortable clothes that allow easy movement and access to the treatment area are also helpful.
What happens during my first appointment?
A first visit typically includes a review of symptoms and health history, discussion of goals, a movement and strength assessment, an explanation of the findings, and an individualized treatment plan. Treatment may begin that day, depending on the evaluation and the patient’s needs.
How long are appointments, and how many visits will I need?
Initial evaluations often take longer than follow-up visits. The number of visits depends on the diagnosis, severity, recovery goals, insurance coverage, consistency with home exercises, and how the patient responds to treatment. The therapist will review a recommended plan of care after the evaluation.
What conditions do you treat?
At Family Care PT, we currently treat the following:Back and Neck Pain
Joint/Extremity Pain
Muscle and Ligament Strains/Sprains
Pre- and Post-Orthopedic Surgery
CRPS / RSD

Plantar Fasciitis
Sciatica
Rotator Cuff Injuries
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Vertigo/Vestibular Dysfunction
Cardiac Rehabilitation
Pre- and Post-Natal Rehabilitation
Health Awareness and Fitness/Wellness Education

Will physical therapy hurt?
Physical therapy should be tailored to the patient’s tolerance and goals. Some exercises or manual techniques can cause temporary soreness or challenge tissues that have not been moving well, but patients should always tell their therapist about pain, numbness, dizziness, or worsening symptoms so the plan can be adjusted.
How do I schedule, cancel, or reschedule an appointment?
To request or schedule an appointment, please fill out one of the forms on our Contact Us page. For appointment cancelation or rescheduling, please call the office at (716) 440-1118.
